I began woodturning as a hobby about 20
years ago when I lived at Mackay and joined the local Woodturning club.
During that time I attended a workshop with some overseas, world class
Woodturners who inspired me with their expertise. Since retiring and
moving to Gympie in 1991 I have had more time to become serious with
the Art of Woodturning.
I have attended three week long workshop with Australian world class
wood turners. One with Terry Martin, author of "WoodDreaming "
and organiser of the "Wood Dreaming" exhibition. This workshop
was on design and techniques. Two others with Lindsay Dunn, whose work
also appears in the "Wood Dreaming" book and exhibition. My
work was also included in a side exhibition with other local wood artists
during the "WoodDreaming" exhibition at the Cooloola Shire
Public Gallery.
I have won a first prize in the Cooloola Cultural Pageant in 1996.
First prize in two different sections and a Grand Champion in the Gympie
Handcraft Fair in 1997 and first prize at the Gympie District Show in
1997 & 1998. First prize and Grand Champion at the Craft Fair-Woodturning
& Woodworking competition at the Woodworks Museum in 2000. In 2001
I gained third prize in the Fine Arts section — Woodturning—at
the Brisbane Royal Queensland Show, 2001. In late 2001 I was included,
with other local Wood Artists at the Cooloola Shire Public Gallery,
as a side exhibition to the traveling wood theme "Rings of History"
exhibition. In May 2002 I attended a wood turning seminar in Sydney
featuring four Australian, world class, Woodturning Artists. My aim
was to observe and learn, with a view to "Pushing the Boundaries
" of what might be called traditional Wood Turning.
In 2003/2004/2005 I have attended woodturning seminars, featuring world
class Woodturners from Australia and overseas.
